Fountains.

The dictionary definition of a fountain: A structure, often decorative, from which a jet or stream of water issues forth creating a tranquil setting.

A fountain is not just a statue with water spouting from it. A fountain has life, a personality, the fountain makes sound, the fountain is animated. The fountain talks to us in a language we know but did not learn.

Fountains in their many varieties of material and textures satisfy the quest for out-of-the ordinary water features for our homes. There are traditional fountains and some unique fountains. Some fountains are dedicated outside buildings, some fountains are suitable for patios, while other fountains are small enough for inside tabletops. Fountains can be made of concrete, plastic, stone, concrete or copper.

In line with the Feng Shui philosophy, fountains of water are an invitation to blend and not struggle, to flow with life, to endure continual change. Fountains are a way of reconnecting with natural elements such as water, stones and plants. Fountains revitalize the subtle currents of life force and beauty that flow through the landscape. In this way the garden water fountain can nourish our human spirit. Water, the essence of life, finds charming expression in a bubbling fountain. Fountains are stress reducers and room beautifiers. Different plants and flowers that accent your garden fountain are a reminder of life and growth. The bubbling sound of small indoor fountains attract people and introduce a natural background noise. The humid atmosphere created by the gentle splash and spray of water fountains is also perfect for growing ferns and moisture-loving plants close by.

Different varieties of garden fountains create peace and tranquility in different ways:

  • Wind chime fountains add tinkling sounds to the murmur of garden water fountains

  • A candle flame, underwater light, or mirror in the garden fountain will cast a brightness symbolizing life and happiness.

  • Different colors in fountains create different moods e.g. green fountains promote growth and tranquility; blue fountains can be beneficial or not - depending on the shade (warmer and with a hint of green is best); brown, tan, yellow and orange fountains harmonize a room with the earth.

Whether you choose a specialist for your fountain or whether you choose to create your own fountain from a kit, the fountain will give you long lasting pleasure. A fountain creates a therapeutic, relaxing, aesthetically pleasing and soothing area in your environment. With your own imagination, you will be able to create and assemble your own fountain on a table top, on the patio or outside in the garden. There are some important things to consider when selecting your fountain and a location for it:

  • Will the fountain be inside; outside; in a courtyard or on the patio

  • How much space does the fountain require

  • Is there a water source or electrical outlet close to the intended fountain location

  • What specific sound do you want the fountain to create, sometimes a softer sound and less water is preferable depending on the placement of the fountain

  • Will the fountain be aesthetically beautiful in the area chosen. Space and size will determine the surroundings and a pleasing visual design needs to blend the fountain with the environment

  • The fountain requires only enough water for the fountain to operate properly. For maintenance purposes will the fountain pool be decorative only or are you going to use the fountain pool for fish or plants as well.

  • Does the fountain need a timer? Make sure the area surrounding the fountain can survive constant moisture

  • How will the fountain show best – is a submerged pool best or can you camouflage installation materials.

  • How will you light your fountain so that it is visually effective at night.
